Akitio Thunder2Quad External Storage Device has Thunderbolt 2 connectivity

Akitio is a company that makes a wide range of storage devices and it has announced a new product this week. The new product is called the Akitio Thunder2Quad and it is a quad bay external storage solution. The device connects to computers via a Thunderbolt 2 port for the fastest data transfer possible. Akitio equips it with two ports so that users can daisy chain the device with other Thunderbolt 2 products like displays.

The storage solution supports 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch HDDs or SSDs. When fitted with HDDs, it can hold up to 20TB of data. For the best performance, the drive can be filled with four SSDs to offer up to 1.4Gbps transfer speeds. Akitio sells the device with or without drives.
The Thunder2Quad will be available soon online with the enclosure alone starting at $449.99. It’s unclear how much the device will cost with HDDs or SSDs installed. All versions of the storage device come with the Thunderbolt 2 cable needed to use the drive.
“Thunderbolt 2 creates an entirely new way of thinking about 4K workflows, specifically the ability to support 4K video transfer and data delivery concurrently,” said Jason Ziller, Marketing Director for Thunderbolt at Intel. “Devices such as the Akitio Thunder2QUAD allow users to experience the awesome speed, performance, and flexibility of Thunderbolt 2 by managing 4K workloads in ways previously unimaginable.”
