Diving Tourism a Growing Attraction in Greece

The mysterious allure of the deep and life in the depths of the sea have kindled the imagination of many, but only a few have the ability to experience them. Underwater photography, however, has brought the wondrous world of the deep closer to the ‘landlubbers’.
The Greek seas are rich in such photographic material, and underwater photography in Greece was only permitted, through legislation, a few years ago.

Taking advantage of the 2005 legislation allowing recreational diving throughout the country, with the exception of designated archaeological areas, local government administrations throughout the country have launched a campaign to attract “diving tourists”.
Some 250,000 divers from abroad, with their families, are expected to visit Greece up through the end of October, while the number from June to the present has already reached 115,000 divers, according to Society for the Protection and Promotion of the Submarine Environment and its Surrounds President George Tzanakis, as told to ANA-MPA.

Some 70 percent of the divers who have already visited Greece this year were from Germany, Russia, Spain, France and Italy, while the other 30 percent were from the US.
This is the first year that the number of foreign visitors coming to Greece expressly for diving is being recorded statistically, as well as their favored destinations.

According to Tzanakis, Greece was selected as the favored diving destination by 95 percent of a total of 7,500 divers who responded to questionnaires in the period 2006-2007.

Greece earned this “title” for three main reasons cited by the respondents to the survey, namely “theme”, given that there are more than 20,000 shipwrecks in the Greek seabed, of which 6,000 have been formally recognized; “price”, as diving in Greece costs about one-third of that in other diving destinations such as Malta, Italy, Croatia, Turkey and Cyprus; and “family”, since the families of the divers are quite happy to accompany them to Greece, which offers a plethora of other activities for an enjoyable holiday.

Greece, says Tzanakis, has an impressive 16,500 kilometers of coastline suitable for diving, with the main destinations of foreign divers being the islands of Kos, Corfu, Zakynthos and Crete, while the recent approval of the re-delimitation of the Northern Sporades area, with 14 new diving spots, creates a new momentum to the Greek market for diving tourism.

Diving tourism, he adds, is not only a reality now in Greece, but also a powerful “magnet” for attracting more visitors, while also noting that, according to figures from the international organization PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), which provides training for divers, more than 20 million certificates have been issued at the global level.

Given that 3.5 million of those certified divers are from Europe and 800,000 of them travel abroad each year for new diving experiences, it is easily seen that “Greece has immense prospects of potentially becoming even their top destination”, Tzanakis believes

The Scream’ painting breaks world record auction sale

Iconic painting ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch has been sold for $119.9m becoming the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.

Created in 1895, the piece went to auction at Sotheby’s in New York and was won by an anonymous telephone bidder.

The sale beat the previous world record for the most expensive artwork sold at auction which was held by Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust. It sold at Christie’s in New York for $106 million (€80.6m) in May 2010.
On Wednesday night in New York after more than 10 minutes of tense bidding, beginning at $40m, the previous record was broken.
Two anonymous telephone bidders battled it out from about the $80 million mark and slowly inched into world record territory.
The masterpiece was put on the market by Petter Olsen, a Norwegian businessman, whose family knew Munch and who have owned the portrait since the 1930s.

Sustainable, historic and absolutely gorgeous, the Hotel Chocolat is a Caribbean vacation experience like no other.  You will experience nature, see how chocolate is made, have dining experiences you never imagined possible and of course, you will relax.

The 140 acre plantation dates back to 1745 and was recently purchased, renovated and is now a luxe hotel and chocolate plantation that offers their guest so much more than the typical Caribbean island experience. Forget boring all-inclusive buffet style dining, basic accommodations and employees with a sour look on their face, because you certainly won’t find it at Hotel Chocolat. Located on the gorgeous island of St. Lucia in the West Indies, Hotel Chocolat is a short drive from the beach and you can be transported by their complimentary shuttle service. If you prefer to relax and unwind in the idyllic setting of a lush green garden setting, then there is no need for you to leave the resort.

Upon arrival at the Hotel Chocolat you will be greeted with a rum punch and shown to your  pod (room) that has gorgeous views of the Pitons. You can choose from a Cocoa Pod room or a Cocoa Pod Luxe room but either will be sure to impress. The Cocoa Pod rooms are 450 sq. ft and among other amenities have a king size four poster bed and an open-sky rain forest shower. The Cocoa Pod Luxe rooms are 750 sq. ft and feature a super king size four poster bed, a private veranda with stunning views of the Pitons and an open-sky twin rain forest shower. Although the accommodations at Hotel Chocolat are amazing, chances are you won’t be spending much time in your room with all of the gorgeous places to explores and things to see on the island of St. Lucia. Hotel Chocolat is a great place to start out from because there are plenty of activities to occupy your time right at the resort.
Club Boucan is open to resort guests only and features a 50 ft. long black quartz infinity pool. Cocoa Juvenate  is the spa at Hotel Chocolat and as you can imagine many of the spa treatments are inspired by chocolate and many of the lotions and treatment potions are made fresh right on the resort grounds. Whether you indulge in a cocoa inspired massage or relax in the gorgeous pool, you will feel as if you have landed in paradise during your entire stay at Hotel Chocolat.

One of the most unique activities is right at your fingertips and is not only fun but also very educational.  The Tree to Bar Tour lasts approximately 3 hours during which you can see how chocolate is made starting with the tree and going through all of the stages of the chocolate making process. Guests even get to roast beans and make their own chocolate bar as well as do lots of chocolate tasting. The tour is $45 per person for resort guests and $65 per person for non-resort guests. The Tree to Bar Tour has excellent reviews from past guests and is highly recommended not only for Hotel Chocolat guests but for any visitors to the island of St. Lucia.

The best part of Hotel Chocolat is the dining experience and if have you read any reviews from past guests you can be confident that you will have an extraordinary dining experience during your stay at Hotel Chocolat. The cuisine is made from fresh local ingredients and is inspired no other than cocoa. Some dishes boast a strong infusion of cocoa while others just a subtle hint and all dishes are sure to tantalize your taste buds. Think of dining in a gorgeous setting with incredible views of the Pitons while eating a Fresh Citrus Salad with White Chocolate Dressing followed by Beef Rib Eye with Dark Chocolate Port Wine Sauce and finished off with a St. Lucian Chocolate Tart all made from fresh local ingredients. It doesn’t any better than that! If you are looking for something as equally exquisite to drink, try a glass of wine from the wine cellar, some vintage rum or a mango bellini.

Hotel Chocolat is not only an amazing resort though, they strive to make the island of St. Lucia a better place and are not only concerned with making money and boosting tourism. Instead they are trying to make a difference in the local economy not only in the chocolate industry but in other areas as well. They use a lot of locally grown produce, locally caught seafood and most of their employees are locals. When you stay at Hotel Chocolat you are not just another resort guest at a mega resort that will better the lives of rich resort owners but you are a resort guest at a sustainable resort that focuses on boosting the local economy and works hard to provide jobs to local residents.

If you’re looking for a vacation that is above and beyond the typical Caribbean island experience, you are looking for an intimate romantic getaway or you love amazing cuisine, then Hotel Chocolat is just the place for you. If you love nature, culture and falling asleep to the sound of tree frogs, then Hotel Chocolat is for you. If you love romance, chocolate and something out of the ordinary, then Hotel Chocolat is for you.

Aston Islander on the Beach

Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages

Stepping off the plane and out into the warm island was an instant treat when we arrived on the gorgeous island of Kauai. Driving to Waimea and seeing the breathtaking canyon, the lush greenery and the little town was even better.

Driving through Waimea you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and even more so when you pull into the Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages. It felt as if we truly had arrived a century earlier onto the grounds of a beautiful plantation. Perfectly manicured grounds, simple yet elegant buildings, quaint little cottages and of course chickens! Our one bedroom cottage was very simple and at first we thought it was a little rustic for our taste but after spending two nights there, we never wanted to leave!

The cottages are not remodeled in the manner that some might expect. They are remodeled in order to be clean, comfortable and for you to feel as if you are back in time living in a plantation cottage. Warm island breezes coming in through the screens, a claw foot bathtub, hardwood floors, and a simple layout which, although rustic is also very relaxing. We enjoyed the kitchen, the patio out back and the comfy chairs in the living room. The most relaxing part was falling asleep at night to the breezes coming in all the windows and waking in the morning to the roosters crowing. It was so peaceful, so relaxed and not at all what we expected. The cottages are ranked as the #1 hidden romantic getaway by Sunset magazine among many other recognitions so we knew there had to something very special about this place and we learned that there was….relaxation, simplicity and the Aloha spirit.

If you are looking for luxury, or you need a fancy room, the plantation cottages are not for you. They do have modern amenities such as a coffee pot, a fully furnished kitchen and a television  but they are by no means modern in some guests standards. In our opinion, the cottages are perfect, because you get the island breeze, the chickens, the wonderful laid back feel of Waimea and it’s much closer if you plan to hike on the west side of the island like we did. The beach is not suited for swimming as the water is a little murky but you can still enjoy walking on the beach or taking a swim in the pool with a gorgeous view of the ocean.

If you like big lawns and gardens and falling asleep to the island breeze instead of the air conditioner, then check out these gorgeous little cottages. The 27 acre property is great for weddings, large groups or family reunions because they have one bedroom units all the way up to five bedrooms units. Enjoy a game of beach volleyball or horseshoes and then take a swim in the pool. The lawn area is perfect for a wedding, a picnic or for kids to play on and the big beautiful trees will be sure to fascinate kids of every age!

The Grove restaurant onsite was a pleasant surprise after a long day of hiking. The prices were great and the food was some of the best we had on the island. We both had Ahi and it was by far the best Ahi we ate during our stay on Kauai and ranked up there with some of the best Ahi we’ve ever eaten. (and we love our Ahi so we eat a lot of it!) Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and the service was excellent. What more could you ask for? They also make a great Mai Tai!! It was one of the most reasonably priced sit down dinners we ate and the best! So if you’re on the island of Kauai, it’s worth the drive to Waimea for dinner at The Grove

The Waimea Plantation Cottages are truly a relaxing getaway and while they make not be luxurious, they are so much better! If you’re looking for a truly relaxing getaway or want big beautiful grounds for a wedding or gathering, then the Plantation Cottages are perfect for you! Contact me today to book your getaway at the Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages.
