Wheel Turns Your Bicycle Into An Electric Hybrid

The Copenhagen Wheel was first announced by MIT back in 2009, it has now gone on sale and will turn your existing bicycle into an electric hybrid bicycle.
The wheel is being produced by start up Superpedestrian, who have licensed the wheel from MIT, and the company is now taking pre-orders on the device.

The Wheel is ridden like a normal bicycle — users pedal and the motor phases in and out automatically. The Wheel learns about the rider and intuitively recognizes how hard he or she pedals and the topography ahead to determine how much support the rider may need. There aren’t any additional throttles, wires, or buttons, maintaining the pure simplicity of cycling.
The Copenhagen Wheel is now available to pre-order it will retail for $699 and comes with a single gear configuration, it will be available for both road bikes and mountain bikes.

You can find out full details on the Copenhagen Wheel and how it works over at Superpedestrian, it even comes with its own smartphone app that will allow you to lock and unlock the wheel, check usage statistics and more.
