Sydney Opera House: The World Wonder
Traveling and again traveling! What can be more exciting than visiting new fascinating places?
My last destination was Sydney, Australia. Why did I choose Sydney? Because it’s a marvelous city where you can find one of the greatest world wonders–the Sydney Opera House!
Now, if you consider Australia trips, particularly Sydney, I may provide you with some helpful information.
When you go to Sydney, don’t miss your chance to visit the Sydney Opera House - the treasure of Australia. The Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon. It is situated on Bennelong Point. That’s where the most beautiful sights of Sydney Harbor are open before you.
The Opera House has many wonderful venues. The Concert Hall is the biggest one and presents the largest mechanical tracker organ in the world. The Opera Theater, Studio and the Drama Theater are relatively small and from these venues you can admire the splendid views of the Sydney Harbor. Then there’s the light-filled Utzon’s room which presents the great architect’s decorative artwork–a woolen tapestry.
This is where 1,500 performances take place annually. No wonder that the Sydney Opera House is one of the world’s busiest art centers.
The exterior design of the Sydney Opera House is undoubtedly unique and incomparable. It’s done in expressionist style. Can you imagine this grand building is 597 feet wide, 221 feet high and implements 66,420 feet of glass! No wonder that it attracts more than seven million tourists annually!
The Sydney Opera House is the only building in the world with such huge shells. The grand outer shells cover the two largest venues of the Opera House. Though creating the shell designs was not an easy task for Utzon and his design team they managed it perfectly. It took them over several years to change the original parabola design of the shells to the form of hemisphere sections..”
Utzon said: “As time passes and needs change, it is natural to modify the building to suit the needs and technique of the day
